Getting a Malaysian student visa is a relatively straightforward process compared to many other study destinations. Here is everything you need to know about the EMGS system, the documents required, typical timelines, and what to expect on arrival.
What is EMGS?
EMGS (Education Malaysia Global Services) is the official body that manages the student visa application process for Malaysia on behalf of the Ministry of Higher Education. Your university applies for your visa through EMGS after you have accepted your offer and paid your initial deposit.
Step 1: Get Your Offer Letter
The process begins after you are accepted by a Malaysian university and pay the initial deposit (typically RM 3,000β5,000). The university will issue a formal offer letter and a payment receipt β both required for your visa application.
Step 2: Medical Examination
You must undergo a medical examination at an EMGS-approved panel clinic in your home country. The examination covers chest X-ray (TB screening), blood tests (HIV, Hepatitis B, Syphilis, Malaria), and a general physical. Results are submitted directly to EMGS.
Step 3: Document Submission
Required documents include: valid passport (minimum 18 months validity), 2 passport-sized photos, academic transcripts and certificates, offer letter from the university, medical examination results, and proof of financial means (bank statement showing sufficient funds). Your university or your consultant submits these on your behalf through the EMGS portal.
Step 4: EMGS Approval (4β8 Weeks)
EMGS typically processes applications within 4β8 weeks. You can track your application status online. Upon approval, you receive a VISA Approval Letter (eVAL) β this is not the actual visa sticker, but authorises you to enter Malaysia.
Step 5: Travel and Arrival
With the eVAL, you travel to Malaysia and will receive a 30-day single-entry pass at the airport. Your university's international office will then apply for the full Student Pass (visa sticker in your passport) through Immigration Malaysia β this process takes a further 2β4 weeks after arrival.
Typical Costs
EMGS processing fee: RM 2,000β2,500 (included in your application/visa fee paid to the university). Medical examination: USD 100β200 depending on your country. Student Pass at Immigration: approximately RM 600. Total visa-related costs are typically RM 2,500β3,500, which universities bundle into their application and registration fees.
